Geographies of the Anthropocene

Members of the geographical and related communities are invited to propose sessions, papers and posters for the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2015.

The Anthropocene has been claimed to herald a new geological epoch in which human society is acknowledged as having become the greatest force shaping planet earth.  Although its recognition as a new age in geological history remains provisional, the idea of the Anthropocene has already captured the public imagination and that of scientists, social scientists and humanities scholars variously advancing new projects, agendas and critiques in its wake. This annual conference theme aims to bring all areas of the discipline to the table, including the physical geography and climate science communities, to explore the rich array of geographical work engaging this powerful idea and its consequences.

Deadline:  Friday 20 February 2015

The architecture of Scotland in its European setting: 1660-1750

The conference will explore the architecture of Scotland’s early classical period,
1660-1750, set against the backdrop of European sister cultures. It will re-examine the
work of major Scottish architects including Sir William Bruce, Mr James Smith, the
Mylne family, William Adam and their contemporaries: builders, garden designers
and clients. Topics explored will include country houses and their landscaped settings,
urban civic and domestic buildings, military buildings, and engineering structures.
The nature and value of Scotland’s international connections, particularly with
England and mainland Europe, provide the main contexts for this period during which
Scottish architects fully embraced classicism for the first time and became strongly
influential in shaping taste elsewhere.
